what’s that doggy doing?

When you’re pushing twenty and happen to be a horse, you may feel you’ve seen it all. My grey mare Lily knows a lot about dogs, but she still pricks up at some of our little Labrador Lila’s antics.

The other morning Lila had appropriated a bright red plastic bucket. Maybe it was the colour. Or the shape. Or simply the fact that it wasn’t hers. But she wanted it. To do something. Roll. Tilt. Snap. I’m not sure. On the lawn, she turned it this way and that exploring the options.

Typical puppy stuff, but Lily was intrigued. She caught sight of Lila sporting the red bucket and marched straight over to the fence to investigate. With warm bemusement. Lily likes to think of herself as a bit more dignified than your average dog, but sometimes she gets sucked in.

I think Lily really wants to come over the fence and play with Lila and the red bucket. Lila sure was having fun…puppies are SO much fun to watch, but hey our 2 and 5 yr old labs would have had just as much fun with that bucket. Thanks for sharing the video.

Debbie, you’ve just given me an idea…Lily has a “joy ball” (a toy designed for horses). Maybe when Lila is older with a bit more horse sense, they can play with it together!

The pup is growing bigger every day. Oh, the enthusiasm of a pup!! She seemed more interested in the chase than the chew – for now. That bucket won’t stand a chance as Lila gets bigger and figures out she can chew the edges. She does look like a happy pup!!

Leslie, what you predicted did indeed happen…Lila did so much damage to the bucket that it ended up in the bin. And it had been such a great toy!!!

Haha that’s very cute. Is this filmed in Australia? The background on your video is stunning, the rolling hills and a verdant landscape.

Yes, it was shot just outside our house. As I say to everyone, it’s especially beautiful when the desert winds aren’t fanning fires! (Earlier this year our community experienced Australia’s worst natural disaster on record with bushfires killing close to 200 people.) At the moment, it’s spring here and lovely.
